Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early nineteenth century, French Empire furniture draws inspiration from classical Roman, Greek, and Egyptian forms. Key characteristics include symmetrical silhouettes, rich mahogany veneers, and gilded brass or bronze mounts depicting classical motifs.

These cabinets predominantly feature solid mahogany and high-figure mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcases. Decorative components frequently utilise cast ormolu or brass fittings, intricate shell or anthemion marquetry, and woven brass wire grilles for central display panels.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy construction with hand-planed timber secondary woods, original mercury-gilded ormolu mounts held by threaded bolts, and hand-cut dovetail joints. Look for natural patination around keyholes and handles, as well as period-appropriate brass wire mesh on door inserts.

Position the cabinet as a focal architectural piece against a neutral backdrop to highlight the warmth of the mahogany and lustre of the brass fittings. Use the internal shelving to display contemporary ceramics, leather-bound books, or glassware to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on metal fittings, relying instead on dry brushing to remove dust without stripping original patination.
