Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of Japan during the late sixteenth century, becoming widely recognised internationally during the Meiji period from 1868 to 1912. It is characterised by a light earthenware body with a distinctive crackle glaze and elaborate enamelled and gilded surface decoration.

Satsuma items are constructed from light-coloured earthenware clay fired at low temperatures. Craftspeople apply a clear lead glaze that craquelures during cooling, followed by multi-layered hand-painted designs using polychrome enamels and gold gilding.

Authentic pieces exhibit a cream or ivory earthenware base with fine, uniform crackle glaze rather than a smooth porcelain texture. Look for intricate hand-applied gilding, raised enamel ornamentation known as moriage, and Japanese maker marks or the circular Shimazu family crest on the base.

A large Satsuma urn functions as a structural focal point on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece. Position the vessel alongside clean-lined modern furnishings to highlight the contrast between detailed traditional craftsmanship and contemporary space.

Dust Satsuma ceramics regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush. Avoid immersion in water, liquid cleaners, or abrasive polishing cloths, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and cause degradation to fragile surface gilding.
