Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A japanned longcase clock is a tall, weight-driven floor clock featuring a wooden case decorated with European lacquerwork that imitates East Asian lacquer traditions. Popular in the 18th century, these cases were finished with built-up layers of varnish and decorated with raised gilt chinoiserie scenes.

The structural cases were typically constructed from pine, oak, or fruitwood, which provided a stable base for the lacquer. The exterior surface was built up using plaster or gesso, covered in coats of spirit or oil varnish, decorated with gold leaf or metal powders, and fitted with brass clock movements and dials.

Authentic 18th-century japanning displays natural age-related craquelure, subtle wear to raised gesso elements, and a muted lustre rather than a modern high-gloss shine. Original dials from the period often feature brass spandrels, silvered chapter rings, and hand-engraved details.

A japanned longcase clock serves as a focal statement piece when positioned against neutral walls in an entryway, formal dining room, or hallway. Modern schemes benefit from pairing the detailed gold and red artwork with clean-lined architectural elements or minimalist furniture.

Keep the clock in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources that cause wood movement or lacquer cracking. Dust softly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial furniture polishes, water, or solvents that dissolve original varnishes.
