Description

A small mahogany longcase clock by these prolific Devonshire Clockmakers.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with a 12" square white painted dial with Arabic Numerals and Arabic minutes to the Quarters. Also with seconds and date to the centre and matching brass hands. The corners painted with Seashells and Seaweed.

The small mahogany case has a beautiful colour and features a long trunk door which unusually has an inlaid edge of ebony. The long plain base with a single plinth. The hood has a flat top, plain attached pillars and mahogany capitals.

Note: The Murch family of Clockmakers were prolific makers throughout the 19th century. The plain proportions of the case, which were typically used in the area, fit very well in either a modern or traditional setting.

Grandfather clocks, also known as longcase clocks, originated following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower weights.

These clocks are traditionally constructed using a hardwood frame, predominantly oak in earlier periods and mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood in later eras, housing brass or iron movements and painted or brass dials.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut brass gears in the movement, natural wear patterns on the wooden case, matching maker signatures on the dial and movement, and traditional joinery methods appropriate to the period.

An antique longcase clock serves as a strong vertical focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, pairing well with both traditional and contemporary minimalist furnishings by providing textural contrast.

Preservation involves maintaining a stable indoor humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight, having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years, and cleaning the wood with a wax-based polish.
