FAQs

A biscuit barrel is a covered ceramic or glass container traditionally used in 19th-century British households to store dry biscuits or cookies on the dining or tea table.

These pieces were typically crafted from pressed or blown glass, often featuring hand-painted enamel decoration, gilding, and sometimes metal mounts made from silver-plate or brass.

Authentic items generally exhibit pontil marks, hand-applied enamel work with slight variations, wear consistent with age on the base, and characteristic Victorian colour palettes such as deep green, cranberry, or blue.

It can be displayed as a standalone decorative accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or glass-fronted cabinet to introduce historic texture and rich colour to a room.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives, soaking, or dishwashers to protect delicate enamel and gilt detailing.
