Description

A Chronometerwerke Hamburg type 5 two day marine chronometer by Wempe numbered 5077. The free-sprung spotted movement with blued steel helical hairspring to a cut and compensated bimetallic balance and jewelled lever escapement, the going barrel with maintaining power, the signed four inch arabic dial with a 56 hour counter over a subsidiary seconds dial, in a gimbaled numbered bowl and oak box.

Wempe was founded in 1878 by Gerhard Diedrich Wempe, and is one of the worlds most prestigious jewellers and watchmakers. In 1938 Wempe bought the Hamburger Chronometerwerke GmbH from shipbuilders based in Hamburg and Bremen. This company, which had been founded in 1905, produced highly precise marine chronometers under the management of the renowned chronometer maker Ferdinand Denker. Through this purchase, Wempe lays the foundations of the company’s own internationally competitive chronometer workshop, which also serves as a training facility for talented watchmakers.

This Chronometer was made in the Wempe Chronometerwerke Workshop to there exacting standards and is a lovely example of a mid century working marine chronometer, having last been used on a Greek boat the ‘Delicat’ as recorded in the label inside the case.

This clock is shown unserviced and in original condition, this clock will be overhauled and comes with our two year guarantee.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A marine chronometer is a highly accurate timekeeper used at sea to determine longitude by means of celestial navigation.

They typically feature a precision clock movement housed in a gimbaled brass bowl, set inside a fitted mahogany or oak box with brass hardware to protect against ship motion.

Authentic pieces exhibit maker signatures, serial numbers, high-grade mechanical escapements, and natural patina on the brass and wood components consistent with age.

Display the instrument on a study desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to add a sophisticated, historical maritime element to the decor.

Keep the mechanism away from extreme temperature fluctuations, avoid harsh chemical polishes on aged brass, and have the movement professionally serviced by a horologist.
