19th century
Sold 28 January 2026 · Chalfont Clocks
This “Miniature French Inlaid Bracket Clock” found a buyer.

It was listed by Chalfont Clocks. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Miniature Ebonised Bracket Clock originally sold by Dent. With engraved bone inlay, brass finials and balustrading. In the manner of a 17th century baroque clock with brass chapter ring striking on a gong.

This clock has exquisite bone inlay, that is further engraved and picked out in ink to add extra depth to the foliate scrolls and swags contrasting with the ebony body, the dial is flanked by 2 Corinthian columns with trompe l'oeil fluting picked out in bone with brass capitols. The diminutive proportions make it particularly rare and useful.

With a Medal D’Honneur movement by Japy Freres & Cie Paris, examined and retailed by Dent, 33 Cockburn Street London, as stated on the back of the movement. The two train movement is of an unusual square formation.

This is an extremely attractive clock retailed by one of the great 19th Century names.

French bracket clocks originated as sophisticated timekeeping devices designed to sit on tables, brackets, or mantelpieces, often featuring intricate cabinetry and precision movements developed by master horologists.

Traditional construction typically involves ebonised woods, tortoiseshell, or exotic veneers embellished with cast brass or gilt bronze mounts, known as ormolu, alongside enamel dials and steel hands.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-engraved details on the backplate of the movement, the quality of the cast brass mounts, natural wear consistent with age, and matching serial numbers on the movement and case.

An antique bracket clock serves as a focal point when placed upon a mantelpiece, a sideboard, or a dedicated side table, contrasting clean contemporary lines with historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, winding it with care using the correct key, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
