Georgian longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originate from the 18th and early 19th centuries and are characterised by tall wooden cases housing a pendulum and weight-driven movement.

They were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring brass dials, silvered chapter rings, and glass panel doors.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-painted or brass dial for maker signatures, inspecting the movement for hand-cut gears, and checking the timber for period-appropriate construction methods and ageing.

A longcase clock serves as a strong focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, grounding contemporary spaces with traditional craftsmanship and vertical visual weight.

These clocks require regular professional servicing, placement away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the wood, and careful handling when winding weights.
