Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Bluish-tinted glaze with potting ridges inside: hand-thrown Japanese export porcelain.
Unglazed foot rings carrying kiln grit: typical eighteenth-century saggar firing.
Hand-drawn phoenix cartouches in iron-red and underglaze blue: traditional Edo palette.
Wear to the overglaze gold leaf: natural softening from two centuries of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of 18th-century Japanese Imari porcelain trumpet vases dates from the Edo Period and measures 31.5 cm in height, with a top rim diameter of 16 cm and a lower body diameter of 11 cm. Each vase is finished with a glossy porcelain glaze in blue and rust red, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue floral patterns, iron red enamel detailing, and phoenix bird motifs across bulbous lower sections and trumpet flared rims. The condition includes professionally restored rims. These vases fit well on a sideboard top in an English country house or contemporary home, positioned to display their hand-painted panels. The white glaze surface, black and grey details in the foliage, and circular concentric ring borders on the base complement the overall Imari aesthetic.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was shipped globally through the port of Imari beginning in the 17th century during the Edo period. The style gained immense popularity across Europe for its distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red and gilded enamel decoration.

These vases are constructed from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, wheel-thrown into a tall beaker or trumpet form with a flared rim. The decoration is created by applying underglaze cobalt blue before firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours such as iron red and gilding, which are set during subsequent low-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic 18th-century pieces generally exhibit visible signs of hand craftsmanship, including slight asymmetry, glaze pooling, pinholes, and spur marks on the unglazed foot rim. The paintwork displays nuanced hand-brushed detail rather than uniform transfer printed lines.

A pair of Imari vases can serve as a focal point when placed symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. The rich cobalt and red palette complements dark wood surfaces, modern minimalist backdrops, and traditional painted cabinetry.

Dust gently with a soft, lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent surface abrasion. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersing pieces in water, as overglaze enamels and gilding can deteriorate over time.
