Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920 Chinoiserie two door cabinet is made of black lacquered wood with gilt decoration. The exterior displays detailed gold figural scenes depicting figures gathered by traditional buildings, alongside plants and lower drawers adorned with delicate bird motifs. Decorative brass corner brackets, patterned hinges, and a prominent central circular brass faceplate accent the doors, while curved drop handles sit on the two lower drawers. The piece stands on small metal-capped feet and presents a rectangular silhouette measuring 100 cm in height, 82 cm in width and 36 cm in depth. Position this cabinet in a living room, hallway or bedroom as a statement storage piece for books, tableware or household items. The striking black and gold palette works well against neutral walls or rich tones in a maximalist interior scheme. The compact footprint allows it to fit neatly into alcoves or smaller spaces while offering practical surface display space on top and enclosed storage within.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to European artistic traditions inspired by East Asian design, characteristically featuring lacquer finishes, gilded architectural or landscape scenes, and decorative brass metalwork.

These cabinets are constructed with a timber core coated in multiple layers of resinous lacquer, detailed with gold leaf or painted accents, and fitted with etched brass hinges, corner mounts, and faceplates.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted detail with slight surface variations, aged patina on brass hardware, natural craquelure in the lacquer finish, and traditional jointing methods inside the carcass and drawers.

A black and gilt lacquer cabinet serves as a high-contrast accent piece in modern spaces, pairing effectively with neutral wall palettes, clean-lined contemporary furniture, or classic period decor.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, fading, or lifting of the lacquer layer.
