Pair Antique W&r Carlton Ware Blush Ivory Floral Pedestal Vases C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A decorative matching pair of antique Wiltshaw & Robinson Carlton Ware blush ivory pedestal vases, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1906–1915.

Each vase has an elegant elongated ovoid body raised upon a circular pedestal foot, with a softly flared neck and gilt-edged rim.

The warm cream blush ground is hand decorated with delicate floral sprays in shades of pink, white, yellow and green, arranged amongst finely painted foliage. Around the upper body is a striking deep cobalt-blue ornamental border enriched with gilt scrollwork, beneath a raised pearl-like beaded band.

Further gilt decoration highlights the rims, necks and moulded foot borders, creating an attractive contrast against the soft ivory and blush ground.

The undersides bear the original early W&R crowned Carlton Ware backstamps for Wiltshaw & Robinson of Stoke-on-Trent, together with Registered Design No. 488460 and painted pattern numbers. The mark and registration number are consistent with early Carlton Ware production from the Edwardian period.

Blush ivory ceramics are decorative earthenware and porcelain items characterized by a soft gradient glaze transitioning from cream to delicate pale pink. Popularised in late 19th and early 20th-century England by manufacturers such as Royal Worcester and Wiltshaw & Robinson (Carlton Ware), these pieces typically feature floral patterns highlighted with gilding and cobalt enamel accents.

Edwardian floral vases were generally manufactured from fine earthenware or porcelain, cast using liquid slip moulds. The ivory blush effect was achieved through sprayed ground colours, followed by transfer-printed floral outlines, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and accent gilding applied using liquid gold before final firing.

Authentic Carlton Ware pieces from the Edwardian period feature printed factory backstamps on the underside base, often showing the W&R globe or crown device alongside the words Carlton Ware and Stoke on Trent. Registration numbers and hand-painted pattern codes are also commonly stamped or painted near the makers mark.

Pedestal vases function as accent pieces when placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or entryway console table. Pairing classical floral ceramics with minimalist backgrounds or natural timber surfaces creates a layered juxtaposition between traditional decorative craft and modern architectural lines.

Clean ceramic pieces using a dry, soft lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush to remove accumulated dust. Avoid immersing gilded or hand-painted porcelain in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture and friction can strip delicate surface gilding and degrade cold-painted enamel details.
