Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Dial initials A.S. M.C Co: Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company before the 1905 Nestlé merger.
Deeply flaked paint on the metal dial: natural shrinkage of original finish.
Spun brass bezel with side hinge: late Victorian shop clock construction.
Heavy cast surround with raised lettering: commercial advertising show for Victorian grocers.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian wall clock dates from the 1890s and is produced by the A.S.C.M Co. The circular piece is constructed from brass, metal, and glass with an aged gold colour finish. The exterior features a wide raised embossed outer bezel bearing the lettering "MILKMAID MILK - NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY IT" with a cruciform motif. The inner dial displays black Roman numerals and has visible chips and wear to the surface alongside two dark hands. The clock measures 44 cm in diameter. It is suited for display in a kitchen, hallway, or dining area on a narrow wall space where it functions as a working timepiece and an advertising display piece.

Commercial advertising wall clocks gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as functional promotional displays for retail stores, dairies, and public houses. Manufacturers supplied shopkeepers with branded clocks to ensure high visibility for products at the point of sale.

These clocks were typically constructed using pressed brass, cast iron, or timber frames paired with paper or painted metal dials protected by glass lenses. Internal pendulum or mechanical spring movements provided timekeeping.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct typography, natural metal oxidisation, wear on the dial face, and maker marks from established horological companies. Inspecting the mechanical movement and assembly hardware behind the bezel helps confirm age.

A graphic vintage clock functions as a focal point on a gallery wall or above a sideboard in modern rustic, industrial, or traditional kitchens. Pair it with neutral painted surfaces to draw attention to the metallic patina and lettering.

Dust the exterior bezel gently with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that strip original patina or paint. Horological mechanisms require periodic professional servicing to maintain accurate timekeeping without damaging vintage components.
