Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Turned knops and dish-shaped tops: forms drawn from church altar candlesticks.
Subtle surface dimpling and soft edges: early brass lathe turning.
Deep drip pans below the fittings: shapes designed to catch candle wax.
Turned timber plinths: later mounts fitted to steady the converted lamp stems.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of table lamps from the Gothic Revival period, dating to 1900, made from brass, timber and fabric. The pieces comprise polished gold brass columns with knopped stems, mounted on turned circular timber bases, and fitted with cream pleated fabric shades. Old-style fabric cable wiring runs through the structure. The lacquered finish removes the need for regular polishing, and the set remains in very good original used condition with no missing elements. Positioned on a sideboard top, these lamps suit traditional or period interior settings as functional side lighting. The lamps measure 79 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep.

FAQs

Gothic Revival lighting draws inspiration from medieval architecture, featuring vertical proportions, turned knops, columnar stems, and simplified geometric or ecclesiastical forms.

These lamps were typically constructed from cast or spun solid brass, often mounted onto turned hardwood bases such as mahogany or oak for stability and visual weight.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast brass construction, threaded component joinery, minor surface irregularities from hand-finishing, and historical electrical conversion fittings.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on a modern sideboard or console table creates balanced proportions and introduces warm metallic tones to contrast clean interior architectural lines.

Dust the brass stems and shades regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that can strip protective lacquers or natural oxidisation.
