Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Pierced cast knops: hand-finished openwork typical of Continental late 19th-century casting.
Engraved geometric banding on the collars: hand-chased decorative metalwork.
Integrated drip pans at the neck: converted candlestick forms from the period.
Turned dark timber bases: stepped profiles in keeping with early 20th-century stands.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of Edwardian table lamps dates from circa 1900-20. The lamps comprise brass components with openwork cast ajour ornamentation on turned columns, wooden circular bases, and cream pleated fabric shades. Visible details include intricately decorated knops along the stems, lacquered metal surfaces, and wiring enclosed in fabric cable. Each lamp stands 75 cm high with the shade attached, measuring 43 cm high without the shade and 18 cm in base diameter, while the shades measure 42 cm in diameter. These functional light fixtures suit placement on a living room sideboard, console table, or bedside cabinet in a traditional interior. The design brings ambient lighting and period character to a hallway, study, or drawing room setting.

FAQs

Emerging in the early 20th century, openwork or ajour brass lighting features intricate pierced, cast, or latticed metalwork that creates detailed decorative patterns and light diffusion.

These lamps were typically crafted using cast brass components, hand-finished or turned on a lathe, and mounted on turned hardwood or weighted metal bases.

Authentic pieces display subtle casting seams, natural oxidisation in recessed details, internal threaded rod assembly, and solid wooden or weighted bases.

Placing a pair of brass lamps symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or bedside cabinets adds warm metallic tones and classical proportion to contemporary room schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and clean metal surfaces with dedicated non-abrasive polish if a bright finish is desired, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on patinated areas.
