Pair of Antique French Inlaid Walnut Marble Top Bedside Cabinets

19th century
Description

An exceptional pair of antique French inlaid walnut marble top bedside cabinets. They were made in France, they date from around the 1870–1890’s.

The quality is incredible, they are probably the finest example of antique French bedside cabinets we have ever come across. They are beautifully made from walnut, with stunning grain patterns throughout. There is fine banding around the drawer fronts, there is also beautiful inlaid floral marquetry on the door fronts. They have beautiful rouge marble tops which are fixed in place, there are also extremely high quality ormolu mounts on the doors and upper corners. The interiors are also nicely fitted out, in one cabinet there is a tambour fronted section with a porcelain lined interior.

This pair of French Neoclassical bedside cabinets dates from the 1870 period. Each cabinet is made of walnut with warm brown grain patterns, set with fixed rouge marble tops, brass ormolu mounts on the upper corners, and fine banding around the single top drawers. The cupboard doors contain oval marquetry panels with floral motifs, framed by cast brass surrounds and paired with drop-ring hardware, while the bodies are supported by turned wooden feet. Each unit measures 86 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. These cabinets serve as bedside tables in a bedroom today, providing storage surfaces for lamps, books, and nighttime items. The enclosed cupboards and top drawers keep private articles neatly out of sight beside a bed or in a guest room. Their compact proportions allow them to fit easily into smaller spaces while adding a traditional French chateau aesthetic to the interior scheme.

French bedside cabinets from this era frequently draw on Neoclassical and Louis XVI design traditions. They typically feature symmetrical proportions, geometric marquetry inlays, fitted marble surfaces, and gilded cast metal mounts.

These pieces were constructed using solid hardwood frames overlaid with decorative walnut veneers and marquetry inlays. The tops were fitted with carved marble slabs, and decorative accents were fashioned from cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-applied marquetry, and original timber back panels. Cast metal mounts should show age-appropriate patination and be secured with hand-cut screws or pins rather than modern machine fixings.

They can be positioned on either side of an upholstered or simple wooden bed frame to create balance. The warm timber tones and marble tops provide textual contrast against neutral wall paint and modern linen bedding.

Dust the wood surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the finish. Clean marble tops using a damp cloth and mild, pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaning solutions that etch stone surfaces.
