This early 18th-century Georgian spice cupboard comes from the English country house tradition. Made from solid oak, the piece has a warm brown timber colour and a visible grain pattern. The single door contains a central fielded panel surrounded by stepped mouldings, secured by a shaped brass keyhole escutcheon fitted with a metal key. A simple moulded cornice tops the structure, and a matching moulding runs along the base, while pegged joinery secures the timber panels. Inside, the cupboard contains eight oak drawers equipped with small brass handles, designed to hold dried herbs and spices. Measuring width 41.3 cm by depth 24.8 cm by height 44.5 cm, the compact cabinet sits comfortably on top of a sideboard or a table in a modern kitchen, dining room, or living space. It offers practical storage for small kitchenware or keepsakes while adding period character to a room. The timber shows natural surface wear consistent with age, retaining an original finish throughout.

In the early 18th century, imported spices were costly trade goods that required secure storage. Small locked cupboards were specifically constructed to protect household spices, herbs, and valuables from humidity and theft.

Georgian cupboards were primarily crafted from solid English oak, featuring hand-planed fielded panels, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as uneven saw marks, hand-cut dovetails or pegs, natural wood shrinkage over centuries, original brass escutcheons, and an aged surface oxidation or patina.

A spice cupboard can be mounted on a kitchen wall to house tea and spices, displayed on a sideboard as a tabletop collectors cabinet, or positioned in a hallway to store small daily essentials.

Clean the surface gently with a soft cloth and apply a clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the timber moisture. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations.
