In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed with frame-and-panel joinery, often featuring carved motifs such as lozenges and lunettes. Historically used to store linens, bedding, and valuable personal possessions, these chests served as foundational pieces of household furniture in early modern Britain.

They were primarily constructed using native English oak joined with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs, known as trunnels. The panels were set into grooved frames to allow for natural timber expansion, and decorative elements often included relief carvings and geometric marquetry or inlay.

Authentic 17th-century coffers exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular peg placements, hand-forged iron hinges or wire loop hinges, and historical wear along the base of the stiles. Look for age-appropriate shrinkage across wider wooden panels and natural patination within carved grooves.

Place an antique coffer in an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed to serve as a functional accent piece that offers concealed storage. Pair the dark wood with neutral textiles, textured plaster walls, or modern minimalist art to create visual contrast.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patination. Avoid placing the coffer directly beside heat sources or in areas with extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or warping.
