Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Deep relief Green Man and mask carvings: late Victorian Renaissance Revival cabinet work.
Prominent medullary ray flecks across the oak: traditional quarter-sawn English or continental timber.
Dark oxidised wax settled into carved recesses: years of natural patination and polishing.
Scalloped shelf fronts and fielded side panelling: typical late 19th-century construction details.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian bookcase is made from solid oak with a dark brown finish and polished glass doors. The two-part piece measures 221 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, standing on a moulded plinth base with visible wood grain and a rich patina across the timber. The upper section contains a pair of arched glazed doors with repeating geometric borders, opening to reveal internal shelving, beneath a frieze of scrolling foliate carving and stylised motifs with corner face masks. The lower cabinet features two panelled doors decorated with geometric patterns centred on expressive lion mask carvings, complemented by floral and foliate carvings along the sides. Suitable for use in traditional or eclectic living rooms, studies, or libraries, this architectural cabinet provides enclosed shelving space for books and display items behind the glass doors, alongside concealed storage behind the lower cupboard doors. The heavy ornamentation, deep hand carving, and robust form create a strong visual presence for a home interior.

During the nineteenth century, British craftsmen drew inspiration from historical Gothic and Renaissance styles, creating substantial oak furniture decorated with intricate hand-carved foliate patterns, lion masks, and geometric panelling.

These cabinets were constructed using solid English or European oak, featuring traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, float glass panes, and hand-carved detailing.

Authentic period pieces display subtle variations in the hand carving, secondary timbers like pine or oak used for backboards and drawer linings, and natural patination across the finish.

Balance the substantial visual weight of dark carved oak by placing it against light neutral walls, pairing it with contemporary warm lighting, and styling the shelves with a blend of minimalist ceramics and art alongside books.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or warping, dust the detailed carvings regularly with a soft brush, and apply clear beeswax polish annually.
