Description

A pair of 19th-century mahogany side cupboards of pleasing proportions. Each cupboard is constructed in well-figured mahogany, with a panelled door framed by subtle inlay and set below a single drawer. The cupboards open to reveal shelved interiors, one retaining its original fitted drawer with compartmental divisions, likely intended for wine storage.

The cupboards stand on shaped bracket feet and retain a rich, warm colour throughout. Their clean architectural lines and generous scale make them versatile, suitable for use as office cupboards, lamp tables, or side cabinets. Likely originally two sections of a larger buffet table. Offered as a matching pair.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Side cabinets from the 19th century are typically distinguished by their use of high-quality flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and functional interior shelving. Designed for understated elegance, they often incorporate subtle mouldings, panelled doors, and sturdy bracket or plinth bases.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany framework combined with cuts of flame mahogany veneer over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass hinges, locks, and handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including uneven oxidation on timber surfaces, hand-planed secondary woods, and genuine wear around keyholes and feet. Look for original brass lock mechanisms and irregular dovetail joint sizes characteristic of pre-industrial craftsmanship.

Pairing deep mahogany furniture with neutral walls creates a balanced contrast that highlights timber grain. They serve effectively as bedside pedestals or flanking storage cabinets in living rooms, complemented by subtle modern table lamps or ceramics.

Clean timber surfaces with a soft, dry cotton cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the cabinets away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent shrinkage or veneer cracking.
