Description

A fine pair of early 19th-century Spode bone vases decorated in the factory’s well-known Japan (Imari) Pattern 967.

Each vase is hand-painted with a fenced Oriental garden design in cobalt blue, iron red and green enamels with extensive gilding. The elegant shape rises from a circular foot to a gently flaring rim. Both rim and foot are encircled by Spode’s distinctive raised pearled border, a laborious technique in which individual white enamel beads are applied by hand to create a jewel-like finish.

The vases are potted in Spode’s early bone china and date to the Regency period, circa 1810–1815.

• Maker: Spode

• Pattern: Japan / Imari no. 967

• Date: c.1810–1815

• Marks: partially rubbed, but still visible handwritten Spode and painted pattern number 967 to each base

• Dimensions: 15.5 cm high, top diameter -11.7 cm.

• Condition: excellent throughout, no chips, cracks or restoration; enamels very well preserved and there’s only small amount of gilt wear, mainly to the top rim.

A very attractive and increasingly difficult to find pair which would grace any collection of English porcelain or Regency furnishings.

Date of Manufacture

Touch of Time Antiques has dated these Regency Bone China Urns to the Regency era.

The Regency style in English ceramics, spanning the early 19th century, is characterised by classical Greco-Roman forms heavily influenced by the vibrant export porcelains of Japan and China, particularly the Imari palette.

Early 19th-century bone china was typically composed of china stone, china clay, and animal bone ash, fired at high temperatures and hand-decorated with enamels and gilt highlights.

Authentic Regency Spode pieces often feature pattern numbers painted in red, purple, or black enamel on the base, alongside specific body compositions and characteristic hand-painted Imari motifs.

Antique porcelain urns can be displayed as statement pieces on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or glass cabinet, pairing their rich historical palette with clean-lined modern furnishings to create a focal point.

Antique bone china should be cleaned strictly by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or dishwashers to protect fragile hand-painted enamel and gilding.
