Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Regency decanter box takes the form of a portable cellarette, constructed from warm brown figured walnut with a smooth finish that highlights the natural grain. The object displays a curved sloped lid, a brass keyhole escutcheon on the front fitted with a working key, and small brass knobs. Measuring 22 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the compact case holds an interior designed for four glass decanters and glassware. Placed upon a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room, this accessory functions as an elegant storage container for spirits and glassware. The timber box provides an authentic period accent for traditional interiors, combining practical organization with classic cabinetwork.

FAQs

A decanter box or tantalus is a specialised wooden container designed to hold spirit decanters securely, often featuring a locking mechanism to prevent unauthorised access to alcohol.

These boxes were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood, often accented with brass mounts, fabric linings, and fitted with lock-and-key mechanisms.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joinery, original hand-cast brass hardware, naturally aged wood patination, and period locks often stamped with maker marks.

Position the box on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or library desk to serve as an intriguing functional bar accessory or decorative tabletop accent.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, keeping it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to protect the wood veneer.
