A French four glass mantel clock, often called a crystal regulator, is a type of timepiece enclosed in glass panels on all four sides, typically featuring an exposed escapement and mercury or compensated pendulum, popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These clocks typically feature a cast brass or gilt bronze (ormolu) frame housing bevelled glass panels, driven by precision mechanical brass spring or weight-driven movements, frequently crafted by renowned makers such as Samuel Marti.

Authenticity is verified by examining the makers stamp on the brass backplate of the movement, serial numbers, the quality of the cast brass or gilt mounts, and the presence of hand-painted porcelain dials with individually pinned numerals.

Position the clock prominently on a flat surface such as a mantelpiece, sideboard, or executive desk where its reflective glass and polished brass can catch the light, pairing it with minimalist surroundings to allow the intricate mechanics to stand out.

Keep the clock out of direct sunlight and away from damp areas, wind the movement gently according to its specific key requirements, and have the mechanism professionally serviced every three to five years to ensure longevity.
