Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These clocks were typically constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or pine, often featuring brass clock faces, steel movements, and glass door panels.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration of the movement with the case, the hand-engraved details on the brass dial, signs of age-related wear on the timber, and maker hallmarks on the movement.

A grandfather clock serves as a strong focal point in a hallway or living room, pairing well with both traditional architectural features and minimalist contemporary decor to add vertical presence and texture.

Mechanical clocks require regular professional servicing every few years, placement away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and careful handling when winding the weights or springs.
