This large 18th-century English country oak coffer presents a dark brown timber construction with visible age, including historic knocks, marks, cracks, imperfections, repairs, and alterations. The rectangular chest has a hinged lid above a carved guilloche frieze containing a keyhole with a missing lock mechanism. The tri-panel front displays intricate decoration featuring a central carved lozenge motif flanked by two panels with geometric and floral carvings, separated by vertical fluted stiles and raised on block feet. It measures 72 cm high, 142 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. Inside, the piece includes a traditional internal candle box. Suitable for use in a hall or period-inspired interior, this structurally sound storage chest provides practical everyday utility combined with authentic historical character. The wood displays a rich dark brown patina from centuries of use, alongside treated historic extinct woodworm holes across the surfaces. Buyers receive the coffer with no keys supplied as part of the lock is missing.

An oak coffer is a traditional wooden storage chest, historically used in European households from the medieval period through the 18th century for storing linens, clothing, and household valuables.

18th-century coffers were built using solid oak timber joined with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs, often featuring panelled construction, hand-carved decorative motifs, and internal candle boxes.

Authentic pieces feature wooden dowel joinery, hand-sawn timber marks on the reverse, natural wood shrinkage around joints, original brass escutcheons, and period hand-carved geometric or floral decorations.

Position an oak coffer at the foot of a bed, along an entryway, or under a window, using its top surface to display ceramics or books while utilising the internal compartment for hidden storage.

Apply a clear beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and preserve the patina, maintain a stable room humidity away from direct radiators, and dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
