Dated 1690 Oak Panelled Chest

17th century
Description

"A late 17th-century solid oak panelled chest, the front relief carved with floral and geometric decoration. The central panel bears the initials “T.S.” and the date 1690. Panelled sides and top. The lid is secured with wire hinges, and the chest is constructed using pinned mortise and tenon joints.

The date places it at the close of the 17th century, a period of transition in English furniture. While later William and Mary pieces moved toward lighter proportions, this example retains the weight and grounded character associated with earlier oak traditions.

Condition Report

In excellent antique condition. Small historic chip to the front right edge of the lid and to the lower right foot. Along with a historic ironwork repair to the rear.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch."

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A joined oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed using mortise and tenon joinery, prevalent during the 17th century in Britain for holding linens, textiles, and household valuables.

These pieces were typically handcrafted from solid English oak, utilising pegged tenon joints, hand-planed floating panels, and hand-carved decorative relief motifs rather than modern adhesives or nails.

Authentic period oak displays signs of hand-tooling, original pegged joint construction, natural dark oxidation in the wood grain around iron hardware, and irregular wear consistent with centuries of functional use.

An antique carved coffer functions as a functional statement piece when positioned in an entryway, at the foot of a bed, or utilized as a low coffee table to provide visual texture alongside contemporary furnishings.

Preserve solid oak furniture by dusting regularly with a dry soft cloth and applying a clear natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations.
