This early seventeenth-century James I oak six-plank coffer exhibits a rich dark brown timber colour and a rectangular hinged top. The front panel bears carved lozenge motifs enclosing the date 1624, alongside scrolling foliate flourishes, notched edge mouldings, and a central iron lockplate. Extended board feet support the structure. Measuring 53 cm in height, 117 cm in width, and 42 cm in depth, the coffer provides compact low-profile storage for household linens or blankets. Position this Jacobean chest in an entrance hallway, at the foot of a bed, or beneath a living room window to add historic character to a traditional interior. The authentic six-plank construction and period hardware create a grounded focal point in domestic settings while serving as a practical receptacle for everyday items.

A six-plank coffer is an early form of utilitarian storage furniture constructed from six solid timber boards joined together. During the Jacobean period, these coffers were commonly used to store textiles, linens, and household valuables.

Jacobean coffers were constructed predominantly from English oak due to its durability. Iron was used for the lockplates, hinges, and corner brackets to provide structural strength and security.

Authentic pieces feature hand-hewn oak timber showing original saw marks, wooden peg joinery, hand-forged ironwork, and natural patination from centuries of handling. Carved dates, initials, and geometric lozenge patterns are also common hallmarks of the era.

An antique oak coffer functions well as a statement piece in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or as a focal storage element in a living area. Positioning the chest alongside contemporary textiles creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern interior styling.

To preserve solid oak, apply high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the original finish. Keep the coffer away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement or splitting.
