Small 17th Century Oak Coffer

17th century
For Sale by Cross Antiques
Description

A small oak coffee in wonderfully original condition standing on lovely tall legs.

The two panel front has trefoil and styalised tulip carving. The top rail has nice scroll carving.

It has a triple paneled top and paneled ends.

It has retained its original wire hinges, lock and most unusually its original key.

It is a lovely colour and has retained its original finish.

As is to be expected it has a few marks associated with age and use. There is slight play in the joints but considering it was constructed without glue that is only to be expected after over 300 years of use. There is also some old woodworm holes to some of the rails in the back but this looks long dead but has been treated as a precaution.

Free local delivery (40mls), national and international delivery arranged at cost

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Small Carved Oak Coffer to the 17th Century.

This small seventeenth-century oak coffer stands on four tall upright legs and measures 62 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. The dark brown timber exhibits a preserved original finish, complemented by a rectangular three-panel hinged lid and panelled ends. The front displays two rectangular panels decorated with raised trefoil and stylised tulip carving beneath a scroll-carved top rail. Additional details include an exposed iron lock plate with a key hanging from the centre, wire hinges, and minor marks and old woodworm holes consistent with age. This traditional piece provides compact storage suited for placement in a hallway, living room, or bedroom. Positioned against a wall or at the foot of a bed, the coffer offers practical utility while retaining historic character. The compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably in various domestic spaces as a blanket box, accent table base, or decorative storage unit. The construction relies on traditional joinery without glue, resulting in slight movement in the joints. The dark timber tone integrates easily into period or contemporary rustic interior schemes, serving as a functional surface and storage receptacle.

A coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, historically constructed with joinery techniques to secure household valuables, linens, and textiles during the 17th century and earlier periods.

Traditional coffers were built using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, incorporating floating oak panels within sturdy stiles and rails to accommodate natural wood movement over time.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-pored pit-saw marks, irregular peg placement, historic iron hardware such as wire loop hinges or lock plates, and deep natural patination from centuries of handling.

A carved coffer functions as a hallway bench, an accent side table, or storage at the foot of a bed, grounding contemporary spaces with historic texture and rich wood tones.

Preserve the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct heat sources, damp conditions, or harsh chemical cleaners.
