Antique Early Welsh Oak Large Coffer

18th century
Description

An early Welsh oak coffer, originating from Breconshire and dated 1647 to the front panel. The coffer is of simple and honest form, constructed with broad oak planks and retaining a strong vernacular character throughout. The front is carved with the initials “W A” either side of the original iron lock plate, adding to the historic presence of the piece. The interior is fitted with a divided storage compartment, while the exterior displays roughly hewn single plank sides and back, typical of early country furniture of this period. The coffer retains excellent surface character and deep colour throughout, with visible age and wear contributing to its authenticity and appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh oak coffer is a traditional timber storage chest, historically crafted in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries to store linens, textiles, and household valuables. These pieces often served as dower or bridal chests and frequently feature regional joinery techniques, carved initials, or historic date inscriptions.

17th-century coffers were constructed from native oak timber, joined using mortise and tenon joints secured with hand-cut wooden pegs. They typically feature heavy plank lids, hand-forged iron lockplates or hinges, and surface decorations rendered with gouge-carving or incised lettering.

Authentic period coffers exhibit clear signs of historical hand-tooling, such as adze marks on unexposed timber surfaces and slight irregularities in construction. Genuine pieces display natural timber shrinkage across the grain, legitimate age-related surface wear, and original hand-wrought iron hardware.

A large oak coffer functions effectively as a focal point at the foot of a bed, within an entry hall, or as a central coffee table in a living room. Combining dark, patinated oak with neutral upholstery, linen textiles, or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Regular maintenance involves dusting the surface with a soft, dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. To protect the timber from warping or splitting, keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels.
