This 18th-century Yorkshire coffer is an oak storage chest finished in a dark brown tone with a wax polish. The piece displays a rectangular panelled front and lid, supported by square legs. Surface ornamentation includes diamond lozenge carvings with scrollwork details, an arcaded top rail with intricate cut-outs, and vertical carved mouldings dividing the panels, alongside a visible keyhole on the front rail. The dimensions measure 71 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a hallway, living room, or bedroom, the chest provides practical storage space while serving as an accent furniture item in traditional interior settings.

A carved coffer from this era is a wooden storage chest defined by joined panel construction and regional carved decoration, historically crafted in northern England to store linens and household valuables.

These pieces were built using solid native oak with traditional mortise and tenon joinery held together by wooden pegs, framing relief-carved timber panels.

Authentic period coffers feature hand-planed surfaces, irregular peg joinery, natural timber shrinkage across panel joints, and dark oxidisation around iron hinges.

A carved coffer works well as a statement entryway bench, a hallway storage container, or placed at the foot of a bed to add historic texture to contemporary rooms.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a clean microfiber cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually to nourish the surface patination.
