This Georgian oak coffer is a solid wood storage chest finished in a warm golden brown colour. The front elevation displays three fielded panels, square stile legs, and a carved frieze featuring the initials D H and the date 1723 alongside a keyhole escutcheon. Visible construction details include pegged mortise and tenon joinery and raised mouldings framing each panel. The piece measures 75 cm high, 144 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. At home in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, the chest provides practical storage for blankets, linens, and everyday household items while serving as a functional surface. The lift-up lid opens to an interior compartment enclosed by traditional panelled timber walls. The solid wood construction and straightforward proportions suit traditional English country house interiors as well as rustic rustic-inspired spaces.

A coffer, also known as a kist, served as the primary form of household storage furniture throughout the medieval, Renaissance, and Georgian periods in Britain, used to store linens, clothing, and valuables.

Early 18th-century coffers were built using joined timber techniques, featuring mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, hand-planed oak panels, and solid stile legs.

Authentic period coffers display signs of hand-tooling, original pegged joinery, authentic oxidisation around iron hinges and lock plates, and carved dates or initials carved directly into the front frieze.

An antique coffer can be positioned at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or used as a central coffee table in a living room to introduce textural contrast and historical character.

Preserve the oak timber by positioning the coffer away from direct heat sources and radiator units, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying a natural beeswax polish annually.
