This collection of eight antique Victorian cranberry glass tableware items includes two jugs, a pair of table salts, and four bowls. The set dates from 1880 in the Victorian style and is made from rich cranberry red glass highlighted with clear glass trim, applied clear handles, crimped rims, applied shell feet, and frilled edges. The items display a deep ruby hue with transparent colourless accents on the feet, rims, and handles. The collection measures 15 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. In a home today, these pieces suit placement on a sideboard top to add colour and traditional English Country House character to a dining room or living space. The glassware serves as decorative tableware or as display items on a surface, bringing the vibrant tone of late-nineteenth-century decorative glassware into an interior.

FAQs

Cranberry glass, also known as Gold Ruby glass, gained widespread popularity in 19th-century Britain during the Victorian era. The distinctive rich red-pink hue was achieved by adding salts of gold to molten glass mixture, creating a vibrant decorative glassware aesthetic widely used for dining and display.

Authentic cranberry glass is mouth-blown glass infused with gold chloride to generate the ruby-pink tone. Craftspeople frequently adorned these pieces with clear glass applied handles, crimped borders, and shell-shaped feet, requiring skilled glassblowing techniques.

Authentic Victorian examples usually feature a polished or rough pontil mark on the base, indicating mouth-blown craft. Look for variations in glass thickness, hand-applied clear glass trims, and a depth of tone that shifts in natural light rather than a flat, modern painted surface.

Displaying cranberry glass near natural light sources, such as on a window sill or open shelving, allows light to accentuate the rich colour. Grouping multiple pieces together on a timber sideboard or mantlepiece creates a warm focal point within classic or eclectic interiors.

Hand wash cranberry glass carefully in warm water with mild liquid soap using a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers and abrasive sponges, as extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals can damage applied glass details and compromise delicate structures.
