Description

This is a tall Legras enamelled glass and base metal vase, manufactured in St. Denis, France and dating from c1920.

The vase is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the base consistent with age and use.

The vase is cylindrical in shape with a slightly everted rim shaped into a hexagon. It was blown in clear glass and then enamelled with a light green coloured background and a summer scene of boats on a lake viewed through trees, all picked out in brown and green, all above a heavily enamelled base in green, simulating grass. It measures 12cm (4.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point. It ends in a base which is plain. The bottom of the vase is encased in a base metal (probably pewter) sleeve in a classical pattern. The word "Legras" is picked out in brown enamel just above the grass. The vase is 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It weighs in at 1.08 kg. (~ 2 lb. 6 oz.).

Art Nouveau glass production peaked between the late 19th century and the outbreak of the First World War, characterised by organic motifs, fluid lines, and innovative chemical treatments developed by French and European glassmakers.

Master artisans utilised layered glass, acid etching, enamelling, and cameo carving, often mounting the finished vessels in custom cast metal bases made of brass, bronze, or pewter.

Authentic pieces typically feature acid-etched or enamelled signatures by the maker, polished pontil marks on the base, and weight consistent with hand-blown production methods of the era.

Position the piece as a standalone sculptural object on a sideboard or mantelpiece, ensuring adequate natural light reaches the glass to accentuate its translucent colours and surface textures.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust, and avoid immersion in water, chemical cleaning agents, or exposure to direct sunlight which can degrade enamelled surfaces.
