Description

A very nice original example of these hard to find classic early 18thc candlesticks....unusual as most of these type of candlesticks by this date were joined to the base by being hollow and then expanded by a conical drift or punch so that it firmly gripped the base....this one is joined by the early method of peening into the base and then cleanly turned...it has a solid tubular cast stem...cast as a one piece tube and a highly domed cast base which has a slight step.... it has the original shaped handle to the side ejector which still works effectively.....good natural colour and no repairs.

English. C1730-40.

Eighteenth-century brass candlesticks typically feature multi-part cast construction, weighted bases, and hand-finished surfaces characteristic of Georgian metalworking techniques.

These pieces were crafted from yellow brass using sand-casting or lost-wax casting methods, followed by lathe-turning to refine profiles and achieve precise fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit casting flaws, file marks, natural patination, and correct construction methods such as pushed-up seams or threaded components consistent with period tooling.

Positioning the item on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table introduces historic metallic texture and contrasting warmth to modern minimalist or transitional schemes.

Preserve the original patina by dusting with a dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners that strip historic oxidisation.
