Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Integral screw threads on the stems: early method of assembling two-part brass candlesticks.
Stepped octagonal bases: classic Georgian styling originating in the early eighteenth century.
Concentric lathe lines underneath: bases finished by hand on an early workshop lathe.
Dark oxidisation in the recessed mouldings: natural build-up over generations of polishing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Georgian candlesticks dates from the 18th or 19th Century and is made of solid brass with a warm gold colour and a polished metallic finish. Each piece features an octagonal stepped foot, a multi-knopped turned stem, and a simple turned socket at the top. Surface wear is visible along the facets and mouldings, showing slight ageing and use while the metal maintains its structural integrity. Both candlesticks unscrew into separate sections for cleaning or storage. Measuring 24 cm high with a 12 cm square base footprint, these items work well placed together on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining table in an English Country House interior. They function practically to hold taper candles or visually as decorative accents within a traditional room setting.

FAQs

Produced during the eighteenth century, these candlesticks typically feature cast brass construction, knopped stems, and geometric bases such as octagonal or round stepped shapes.

Early brass candlesticks were cast in two vertical halves using sand moulds, soldered together, and finished on a lathe to create smooth surfaces and turned knops.

Look for visible joining seams along the stem, subtle hand-finishing irregularities, heavy casting weight, and evidence of original push-up wax ejector mechanisms inside the column.

Arrange them in pairs on a dining table or fireplace mantelpiece alongside ceramics or natural greenery to add classical proportion and warm metallic tones.

Remove wax residue using warm water, then clean gently with a soft cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical surface patina.
