These early 20th Century Art Nouveau candlesticks are cast from heavy solid brass with a polished gold finish and smooth reflective surfaces. Each example features a wide flared circular base leading to a tapered column stem detailed with a ring-turned knop below the socket. The design exhibits clean proportions and robust craftsmanship typical of English country house interiors from the period. Measuring 23 cm high and 11 cm wide, these items are practical for everyday use. They sit securely upon a mantelpiece, sideboard or dining table to hold taper candles, adding warm metallic reflection and period character to a traditional or transitional living space.

FAQs

Art Nouveau brassware from this period typically features flowing lines, organic tapering, and understated geometric or plant-inspired contours. Design moved away from heavy Victorian ornamentation toward streamlined, elegant forms that emphasized functional simplicity.

Pieces from this era were primarily crafted from solid cast or turned brass, often finished through manual polishing or lacquering. Construction frequently involved threaded central rods joining turned stems to weighted circular bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle casting marks, hand-turned thread grooves inside the base, and uneven wear or tarnish inside the candle sockets. The weight is typically substantial relative to size, reflecting solid brass rather than hollow modern reproductions.

Place them as a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard top to add warmth and height. Warm metallic tones contrast effectively with contemporary matte surfaces and dark neutral backgrounds.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth. To preserve aged patination, avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes; unlacquered brass may be treated with a gentle, specialized metal polish if a high shine is desired.
