Staffordshire spill vases were produced in the English potteries during the 19th century, serving both as decorative chimney ornaments and practical holders for wooden spills used to light fires or pipes.

These figures are typically crafted from earthenware or bone china, slip-cast or hand-pressed in moulds, and hand-painted with underglaze colours and overglaze enamel highlights.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic crazing, minor kiln flaws, hand-painted detailing, hollow interiors, and often an unglazed base typical of 19th-century manufacturing techniques.

These characterful pieces work well displayed on mantelpieces, within open bookshelves, or atop wooden cabinets, adding a touch of historic charm and colour to eclectic or traditional rooms.

Keep earthenware out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners on items with delicate overglaze enamels.
