FAQs

Marble top bedside cabinets, often referred to as marble top commodes or night lockers, became popular in 19th-century European bedrooms. The inclusion of marble provided a hygienic, durable surface that could easily withstand the placement of washbowls, pitchers, and chamber candlesticks before indoor plumbing was commonplace.

These cabinets are traditionally constructed from a hardwood frame, such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often finished with decorative veneers and parquetry. The tops feature fitted slabs of natural marble, frequently in shades of pink, white, or grey, accompanied by brass or bronze mounts, handles, and sabots.

Authentication involves examining the construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers and traditional mortise-and-tenon framing. Genuine period pieces will exhibit natural ageing on the marble, hand-carved or cast brass hardware, and timber shrinkage consistent with historical use.

Pairing antique marble top cabinets with contemporary furnishings creates a sophisticated, eclectic contrast. They function effectively as nightstands flanking a modern upholstered bed or as compact side tables in a living room, adding textural depth through the combination of warm wood and cool stone.

Maintenance requires cleaning the timber with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood. The marble top should be cleaned with a pH-neutral stone cleaner to prevent staining and protected from acidic substances like cosmetics and beverages.
