Marquetry is an elaborate decorative technique where thin slices of different coloured wood veneers are assembled to create pictorial patterns or geometric designs on furniture surfaces.

These pieces typically utilise a solid wood carcass such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, overlaid with various exotic and domestic wood veneers like fruitwood, satinwood, and ebony for the marquetry details.

Authentic pieces often show hand-cut veneer pieces with slight irregularities, natural ageing and oxidation of the woods, traditional joinery methods, and hand-applied finishes like French polish.

Pairing antique marquetry with clean-lined modern upholstery and minimalist decor creates a sophisticated contrast, allowing the intricate wood patterns to serve as focal points.

Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting, and dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth without using silicone-based polishes.
