FAQs

Mahogany became a dominant timber in high-end cabinet making during the 18th century, prized for its strength, rich grain, and stability, which made it ideal for substantial library furniture.

Authentic period bookcases are typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring traditional joinery such as dovetails on drawer boxes and tongue-and-groove panel backs.

Authentication involves examining timber oxidisation, hand-cut joinery marks, backboard construction, and the type of fixings used, ensuring consistency with the stated historical era.

Pairing a dark wood architectural piece with neutral walls, contemporary art, and curated stacks of books creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain stable relative humidity levels, keep the timber out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
