This nineteenth-century Regency gentleman's library mahogany waterfall bookcase exhibits a warm brown timber finish and stands in original condition with some restoration, displaying a few marks to shelves and one replacement period drawer knob circa 1860. The piece displays graduated shelves with dark trim, scalloped side profiles, an arched pediment, and two lower drawers with turned wood knobs. Measuring 145 cm high, 98 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, the unit provides ample storage and display space for books and decorative items. In a modern home, it suits placement in a study, library, living room, or hallway to organise reading materials while adding traditional character.

FAQs

A waterfall bookcase is characterised by open shelves that gradually decrease in depth from the base to the top, creating a stepped or cascading visual profile.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or pine, often incorporating leather or fabric trims along the shelf edges and hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned drawer knobs, genuine wear consistent with age, natural timber patination, hand-sawn backboards, and period-appropriate drawer construction.

Position the piece against a neutral backdrop, filling the tiered shelves with a combination of books, framed art, and ceramic vessels to highlight its graduated shape.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
