This Neoclassical Revival open bookcase originates from around 1920 and is formed from mahogany with warm brown timber tones. The piece has a rectangular top with a moulded edge and boxwood line stringing, above a wide upper frieze decorated with inlaid satinwood swags and boxwood stringing along the front edges. The interior holds three open storage compartments created by two adjustable shelves against a dark back panel, whilst the base sits upon a solid plinth with lower moulding. The bookcase stands 101.5 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 32 cm deep overall. Placed in a gentleman's library, study or living room, the unit provides open shelving for book collections and decorative objects while adding period character to domestic interiors.

Open bookcases from the early 20th century frequently drew design inspiration from 18th-century Neoclassical patterns, featuring symmetrical low-profile forms, exposed shelving, and classical marquetry motifs such as swag garlands and stringing.

These bookcases were typically constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over a stable timber substrate, finished with decorative boxwood or satinwood line inlay and marquetry detailing.

Authentic period examples exhibit precise joinery, original patination across polished timber surfaces, recessed adjustable shelf supports along the interior sides, and fine detail work in the marquetry.

Position the piece against a focal wall or underneath a window sill, utilizing the upper top surface for table lamps, ceramics, or framed pictures while arranging books alongside decorative items across the open shelves.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid warping and fading, and clean the surfaces regularly by buffing with a soft microfibre cloth and high-quality beeswax polish.
