Description

Rare Antique Kutani Porcelain Lidded Vase, Meiji Period, Foo Dog Lid, Hand-Painted Floral Scene

A rare and antique Kutani porcelain lidded vase from the Meiji period, beautifully decorated with delicate, hand-painted floral patterns and blossoming branches, executed with exquisite detail. The piece showcases the traditional Kutani color palette of red, gold, and white, framed by a signature red border known as Akae, which is characteristic of Kutani ware. The central motif of the vase features a finely detailed scene of three figures, likely noblemen or scholars, dressed in luxurious kimonos adorned with golden embellishments and intricate patterns that signify high social status.

The lid of the vase is topped with a finely crafted Foo Dog (Shishi), a traditional guardian creature symbolizing protection and good fortune, accentuated with gilded details. On the base, there is a red-painted mark in cursive script, partially faded, which reads "Kutani zo" (???), meaning “Made by Kutani”.

Kutani ware, particularly pieces from the 19th century, is highly sought after in the antique market, reflecting the cultural and artistic revival of Japan during the Meiji period and the increasing Western demand for Japanese decorative arts.

Meiji period Kutani porcelain refers to ceramic items produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912, traditionally characterised by vibrant iron-red and gilt enamel decorations depicting figural scenes, flora, and fauna.

Kutani ware is crafted from fine white porcelain clay, hand-painted using mineral pigmentsmost notably iron red (akae) and heavy gold leaf gildingbefore being high-fired in a kiln.

Authenticity is identified through careful examination of the hand-painted brushwork, the presence of specific kiln marks or artist signatures on the base, crazing in the glaze appropriate to age, and the distinctive thick application of gold and iron-red enamels.

An antique lidded vase works effectively as a focal point when placed on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece, contrasting clean modern lines with intricate historical craftsmanship.

Antique porcelain should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and washed only when necessary using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, or immersion of pieces with fragile historical repairs.
