Description

A very fine pair of early 18thc brass candlesticks...they stand on a square base with slightly incurved chamferred corners and two knops with the top one being slightly ridged as in a mushroom top shape....what surprised me was the extra long candle sconce, something you don't see very often....both are in excellent condition with no repairs and clearly show the "seamed" construction, which is always a desirable feature...

English. C1730 / 40.

Eighteenth-century brass candlesticks typically feature cast construction in multiple sections, often comprising a stepped or faceted base, a knop-turned stem, and a sconce socket with an ejection hole.

These pieces were primarily produced using sand-casting or core-casting methods, where molten brass was poured into moulds, followed by lathe-turning and hand-finishing for precise detail.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy weight, casting seams, age-related surface patination, tool marks from lathe work, and construction in separate assembled parts rather than a single cast.

They add warmth and historical contrast when placed on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard, pairing effectively with both minimalist modern decor and traditional interiors.

It is best to preserve the natural patination by avoiding harsh chemical polishes; gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient to maintain the metal.
