FAQs

Delftware originated in the Dutch city of Delft during the 17th century as a European attempt to emulate prized Chinese porcelain imports, eventually developing its own distinct artistic identity.

Authentic pieces are crafted from local clay, coated in a tin-lead glaze to create a milky white opaque surface, and hand-painted with cobalt blue pigments before a final transparent glaze firing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the crazing of the glaze, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, weight, and characteristic maker marks or initials on the unglazed base rim.

These pieces can be displayed on mantelpieces or console tables to introduce classical pattern, contrasting effectively against minimalist backdrops or traditional wood-panelled rooms.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid washing or exposing the porous tin-glaze to moisture, fluctuating temperatures, or direct sunlight to prevent cracking and fading.
