Description

This is a Georgian, English double series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. An opaque twist wine glass features a stem containing white or coloured enamel glass threads, typically produced in Britain during the 18th century.

These glasses were typically manufactured using lead glass, which provided clarity, weight, and durability, combined with enamel glass for the twist formations in the stem.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristics of early manufacture such as pontil marks on the underside of the foot, subtle surface irregularities, and genuine wear consistent with age.

Antique glassware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, open shelving units, or on sideboards to add historical texture and refined detail to contemporary spaces.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock.
