Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

They were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring brass dial faces with engraved or cast spandrels, and glass panels to protect the clock face.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-engraved details on the brass dial, the makers signature, hand-cut gear teeth, and the construction methods of the wooden case, which should display period-appropriate joinery and natural ageing.

Positioning the clock as a focal point in a hallway, living room, or study adds verticality and traditional character, contrasting effectively against minimalist walls or paired with contemporary furnishings.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and damp areas to protect the wood and internal mechanics, and have the movement professionally serviced every few years to ensure proper functioning.
