Georgian glassware, produced during the reigns of Kings George I to IV (1714 to 1830), is characterised by the introduction of lead metal, which allowed for clearer, heavier vessels with distinctive optical qualities and intricate stem formations.

These glasses were typically hand-blown using lead glass, often featuring multi-part construction where the bowl, stem, and folded foot were crafted separately and joined while hot. Air twists were created by drawing out trapped air bubbles inside the molten metal during the pulling of the stem.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic signs of age, such as pontil marks on the underside of the base, minor surface wear or scratches appropriate to their history, and subtle irregularities inherent to hand-blown manufacture.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving units, or utilised on dining tables as part of an eclectic tablescape, adding historical depth and textural contrast to contemporary schemes.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and should never be placed in a dishwasher.
