Description

This is a very pretty small cameo glass Berluze solifleur vase originating in the workshop of the Daum brothers in Nancy, France and dating from the beginning of the 20th century, c1910.

The vase is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 100 years of use.

The vase is a teardrop in shape and measures 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point. It is 16.5 cm (6.6 inches) in height. It is blown in frosted clear glass and is decorated in autumnal colours of orange, green and black, representing what appear to be blackberry brambles. The neck is plain. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The words "DAUM NANCY" are carved out in cameo on the bulb.

It weighs in at 90 g. (~ 3 oz.).

Daum Nancy was a renowned French glass atelier founded in the late 19th century in Nancy, France, becoming a central figure in the Art Nouveau movement known for innovative cameo and acid-etched glass techniques.

Cameo glass is crafted using multiple layers of coloured glass fused together, then carved, wheel-engraved, or acid-etched to reveal contrasting background colours and create intricate relief designs.

Authentic pieces typically feature distinct signature markings such as Daum Nancy with the Cross of Lorraine enameled or acid-etched on the surface, alongside exceptional weight, multi-layered depth, and precise craftsmanship.

Place the piece on a neutral surface with adequate lighting, such as a mantelpiece or console, allowing natural light to pass through the translucent glass layers without competing elements.

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and direct sunlight that might affect enameled signatures or alter fragile surfaces.
