This pair of Chinese decorative cloisonne lidded vases, dating from 1900, consists of two urn-shaped vessels with removable domed lids topped by small spherical finials. The pieces are constructed from brass and copper with a black enamel finish, decorated with intricate wirework depicting floral motifs and butterflies in red, blue, yellow, green and white. Each vase is raised on a lobed, shaped base with open cut-outs, and exhibits delicate scrolling details across the surface. The dimensions are 15 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, these decorative lidded urns suit placement on a mantelpiece or side table to add colourful ornamentation to a room. They can also be displayed on a bookshelf or within a glass-fronted cabinet alongside other collectables, bringing a traditional Eastern aesthetic to a living area, study, or hallway display surface.

Cloisonne is an ancient metalworking technique developed in the Near East and later perfected in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It involves soldering thin metal strips onto a vessel base to create partitioned designs, which are subsequently filled with enamel paste and fired.

Traditional cloisonne pieces are constructed on a brass or copper body. Fine copper or gilt-bronze wires form the pattern outlines, while mineral-based enamel powders mixed into paste provide the colourful vitreous finish after high-temperature firing.

Authentic antique pieces typically exhibit hand-wrought copper or brass wires of slightly varying thickness, minor firing pitting within the enamel, and natural oxidisation on exposed metal rim edges. Heavy weight relative to size also indicates a traditional metal base.

Pairs of lidded vases add symmetry and rich colour when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf. Their intricate patterns bridge traditional and maximalist interior schemes effectively.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, harsh chemicals, or submersion in water, as moisture can compromise unglazed metal joins and cause tarnishing or enamel degradation over time.
