Bristol blue glass is a distinctively deep cobalt blue glassware produced primarily in Bristol, England, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, often enriched with enamel or gilt decorations.

These pieces were mouth-blown using cobalt oxide to achieve the deep blue colour, frequently featuring hand-gilded inscriptions and fitted with cork stoppers featuring metal or glass rings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor bubbles or imperfections within the hand-blown glass, genuine wear to the gilding, and period-appropriate typography for labels such as rum or gin.

Position the decanter on a polished wood sideboard, a drinks trolley, or an open shelf where natural light can pass through the cobalt glass to highlight its deep colour.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives or submersing metal-fitted stoppers to protect the original materials and any fragile gilding.
